Dessert for Breakfast!

As much as I love sweets, I'm not really a dessert girl on weekdays. I find that my workday eating schedule doesn't really lend itself to dessert time.

I eat breakfast, maybe snack on a few nuts at my desk before lunch, eat lunch, have a healthy pre-workout snack in the afternoon, hit the gym after work, and have dinner when I'm all done. I'm not home from the gym until at least 6:30 or 7:30 p.m., and it takes a few minutes to cook dinner. Before I know it, it's 9 p.m., my cut-off time for eating anything.

What's a dessert-loving vegan to do? Have dessert for breakfast!! That's what I did this morning with this melty Chocolate, Banana, and Almond Butter Panini from Color Me Vegan:

The sandwich is listed in the dessert section in the book's Color Me Rainbow chapter (the sandwich has foods from the tan, black, and yellow groups). Whole wheat bread is spread with Justin's Maple Almond Butter (omg, this stuff is amazing!), dark chocolate chunks, and banana slices. Then it's pressed in my new panini maker for a couple minutes. The inside gets all melty and gooey and the outside is crispy-crisp.

Since the only real sugar came from the tablespoon of dark chocolate in the recipe, I didn't even feel guilty for having dessert for breakfast. And I wasn't sad later in the day when I didn't have time for dessert yet again. Perfect solution.

How often do you eat dessert? Everyday? A few days a week? In place of meals?

This looks really truly excellently delicious.

I'm a special-occasion dessert kind of person, but I do love the occasional dessert-y breakfast. Recently I've been putting hot chocolate powder in my oatmeal. Yes please.

I tend to not have dessert too often, but I find that once I have had it a couple of days in a row, suddenly I am craving sweet things to finish off every night!

I am loving the sound of the recipes you have been making from Colour Me Vegan... I am trying not to buy any new cookbooks at the moment but I may just have to cave and get this one and the cookie one...

Dessert = everyday.

Kari - I did the same thing with my oats last weekend. Added some Van Houtten hot chocolate mix and some peanut butter and turned my oats into something of a Reese's heaven. I haven't done it since, I alternate what I put in my oatmeal, but I will definitely do it again.

It looks delicious but I can't eat nothing too much sweet for breakfast. Sometimes I eat cupcakes but I leave them without the frosting :P

But I would eat dessert everyday if I could, when I was working out sometimes I used to have just the dessert for lunch!

Oh my gosh, this looks delicious!! I totally am asking for a panini maker for my birthday... even though I also was contemplating a waffle maker...

Honestly, I rarely have dessert at all. Like you, I'm super busy during the weekdays and literally just forget about dessert. It doesn't help that I don't keep any chocolate in the house (otherwise it WOULD be gone in a day), and am often too tired to go out to the store to buy any.

On the weekends, especially if I'm out with friends, I'll splurge.. donuts, or fresh toast, something "dessert-ish". Then I feel as if I can justify the extra calories and expense ;)

*That was supposed to be french toast. Although fresh toast is good too, I guess.

Wow, you just crushed me. I had sprouted honey-wheat bread toasted with peanut butter and apple jelly this morning and it was delicious. Then I just read your blog and saw that your breakfast was FABULOUS!! hahaha I must get a panini maker. ASAP. Thanks for sharing that beautiful dessert!

I was just telling a friend the other day that she could make desserts using her new panini maker.

I think I probably do eat dessert, more than I realize, even if it is just a piece of dark chocolate :) That breakfast/dessert looks heavenly!

Interesting! I have yet to try banana sandwiched between two slices of bread. Dessert? YES! Every day! I need to have a little something sweet a couple of hours after dinner, and if I don't have anything then I make a smoothie. Must. Have. Sweet! :)
