I didn't realize that I'd never made calzones until I saw Jessy from Happy Vegan Face's scrumptious calzone pics a few weeks ago. It seemed like a fun challenge and a great way to take advantage of the meltiness of Teese.
I stuffed these babies with homemade pizza sauce (from Vegan with a Vengeance), Tofurky Italian Sausage, Teese, artichoke hearts, and black olives:
The picture isn't the best, I know. But calzones aren't that attractive on the inside. Trust me, it tasted way better than it looks!
I made a homemade pizza crust using the recipe from VwaV, but I subbed whole wheat pastry flour to make it healthier.
Unfortunately, I didn't realize that one should assemble a calzone in the pizza pan one plans to bake it in. I assembled the first one on a plate and attempted to pick it up and move it to the pan. Oops! The whole thing fell apart. I saved most of the filling for the next calzone, but the dough was coated in hot tomato sauce and was totally unsalvageable. Luckily, I had enough dough left to make three calzones! Yummy!

Sorry that the first calzone fell apart; but hey, you mastered the other ones!! Yum!!
Oh yum calzones are awesome! The fillings you choose sounded SO good ... the innards shot looks appealing to me though, haha - look at all that melty goodness! :0) Oh bother, sorry about the first calzone ... but I bet the taste makes up for it!!
I love calzones! They're so easy to make, too. I like to make them with the Veganomicon cashew ricotta and whatever veggies I have lying around.
I learned that lesson the hard way as well! mmm Teesy calzone. Good idea.
i did a vegan vegetable terrine and a vegan banh mi today that i think you might enjoy looking at. i sometimes forget what a fun challenge it is to cook vegan food.
YUMMMM I love calzones.
This is really nice. Very Italian! Nice to know the teeze works so well.
I'm glad to see I wasn't the only want obsessed with calzone after Jessy's post, haha. Yours look absolutely great!
Nice job! This looks like delicious comfort food.
Just looking at that calzone picture is making my mouth water! I love the challenge that comes when making foods from scratch like this- dough and all! Sounds like a yuuuummy meal!!
oh my! haha i always see those pizza hut commercials for the "pzone" and they look sooo good..if only they werent made with dairy.. haha i need to try out the ones you made! :)
Ooh, your pictures are making me want some teesy vegan calzones! And definitely count me in if they're whole wheat. :)
The brown-edged tofu from my blog came from Pei Wei Asian Diner. Have you been there before? I'm working there for the summer, and they serve this divine 5-spice baked tofu. I ordered some cold (but already baked) tofu one day and crisped it up in the frying pan at home. You can get a side of this awesome tofu at Pei Wei for $2 or at most Chinese/international grocery stores -- just look for the 5-spice tofu!
daaayyyyuuuum, Bianca! i think the calzone looks freak'n awesome! now i want to order more teese & make more delicious calzones! your fillings sound soooooooooooooooo rock'n! i've never made calzones with sauce inside - this i MUST try! and i need to get my hands on some of that tofurky sausage, too. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm! oh, and we the same thing with the first calzone we assembled, too! glad you were able to save the fillings!
That looks so delicious. I can't wait to try to make my own. That looks so yummy and healthy. I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one looking for whole wheat options.
Oh my dog I love love love calazones!! I've been jonesing for one ever since Jessy put that up, but it's been so hot I haven't felt like it... but no matter what you thought, that picture looks way good and way sexy- I will blame you for the over-eating I will most definitely do when I make these!! :)
Mmm, I love calzones. My favourite comfort food, though I haven't tried to make them in awhile. It always got quite messy :-S
Those calzones are beautiful! Great job! You are doing such a great job of convincing me to buy Teese. I can't believe its melting action!
the calzones look good. is the teeze really good?
also, about the squash blossoms. they are stuffed with a potato & carrot puree'. sometimes i edit so that the names of my food aren't too much of a mouthful, ha!
That calzone is GENIUS. Totally salivating over here...
Yummy! Andy and I had a calzone disaster like yours once, but we just kneaded the filling through the dough roughly, and then pressed it into a baking dish and had pizza bread!
holy calzone!!!!!

<3 calzones. The fillings sound perfect! Except the olives. I'm still coming around to liking those.
Mmmmm, I love calzones. I'll bet the teese was a great addition too.
