Take That McDonald's!

I try to avoid McDonald's. They put beef fat in their fries, and the only vegan food on the menu (the baked apple pies...yup, they're vegan) has 5 grams of trans fat per serving! But I occasionally stop in for an iced coffee with no cream when I'm on the road with no Starbucks in sight. The last time I made such a pit stop, I noticed the giant "Southern Chicken Biscuit" sign in the window.

And that inspired me to create this Tofu "Chicken" Biscuit:

I used the Southern Fried Tofu Chicken recipe that I'll be including in my cookbook, as well as my own recipe for flaky Buttermilk Biscuits. For some reason, I felt like the sandwich needed a little mustard too.

Wow, was this delish! I'll definitely be including this as a serving suggestion for the Southern Fried Tofu Chicken in my cookbook.

On the side, I had Fried Corn and a Side Salad:

The fried corn isn't really fried, but that' s what my mom calls it. You do cook it in a skillet, but there's no hot oil involved...just a little soy margarine.

"Fried" Corn
----------------
4 ears corn, cut off the cob
1 cup soymilk
2 Tbsp. soy margarine
1 Tbsp. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1 Tbsp. flour

Combine the corn, soymilk, margarine, sugar, and salt in a skillet and cook on medium heat for about 10 minutes. Slowly stir in the flour, and continue cooking for 10 to 15 more minutes or until corn is soft and liquid is absorbed.

Baked apple pies are vegan? I had no idea and just looked it up on their website - it's true! This is not good... I live across the street from the only McD's in town with a 24hour walkup window! I used to love those pies when I was a kid...

(the sandwich looks good, too, I'm just sidetracked by the pie talk!) :)

I thought Mc Donalds no longer put beef fat in their fries - it's all cottonseed oil or something now (not like cottonseed oil is food)

Ooh, this looks GOOD! Can I drive thru at your place?
Also, I am NOT telling my husband about the apple pie! No no no.

Bianca, you know how to make a great Southern spread of food! I can't wait for the tofu and biscuits recipes. Consider me on the "pre-order" list for the cookbook for sure!

Yum! The sandwich sounds terrific.

I've never tried their apple pies but I don't think I ever will. I hate fast food, I don't even like going out to eat. Who know what they put in your food??

However I would let you cook for me anyday because that sandwich looks fantastic!

wow! that's awesome! your biscuits look perfect - and the fried "chicken" tofu, damn!

and yeah - that sucks that mcdonald's offers only 1 vegan item. i thought their fries were cool, but in looking online a few weeks ago - they have "natural beef flavor" which consists of ickies + hydrolyzed milk! grossness! and not that i should be eating anything from there - but it would be nice if their fries were cool...

i can't wait for your cookbook, Bianca! seriously. it's going to be the most glorious thing EVER!

thanks for the recipe for the fried corn! i'm totally going to try that with the last of the local corn we've got! superw00t!

i didn't know that about mc d's i try to avoid them entirely after reading fast food nation and super size me...i just think micky d's is evil. anyway, good move on the fried tofu sandwich. i was always stumped by fast food places calling something "southern." what does that mean? does the sandwich fly the rebel flag and speak with an accent? does the sandwich like to drink mint juleps? does the sandwich go to a big ol' baptist church on sunday, or perhaps have a large sum of money invested in wal-mart?

Now that is some southern cooking for you there! That looks great. That could be a dinner or breakfast sandwich too. It is only 10 am and you got me thinking how good a biscuit and your southern fried tofu would go down with a great big sweeeet Teaaaaa!. You have to hold the vowels or it doesn't sound southern. I simply cannot wait for this cookbook to come out!

Yummeh! I had one of those chicken biscuit things before I went veg - ack! They were dreadful even by MCDonald's standards. Yours looks much much better!

I've missed reading your blog this week! I'm so glad I got a chance to stop by. I loved your B-52's party! Loveshack was one of my favorite songs growing up.

I'm also in love with the tofu chicken biscuit. What I wouldn't give to have one of those right now!

Oh man, that looks so delicious - I want your cookbook NOW, lady! Also, about 1 million times better than anything McDonalds makes.

What a yummy and comforting meal! I try to avoid McDonalds too, especially since they barely have any options for us vegans but have you tried their Asian Salad minus the chicken? It's heaven on earth!

Haha I remember reading that the apple pies were vegan. I couldn't believe it! But YOUR meal looks much yummier than anything McDonalds ever churned out.

So when is the cookbook coming out?

I honestly can't tell you the last time I ate anything in a a fast food place (calling them restaurants is sort of a misnomer in my opinion). That sandwich sure looks yummy, though!

McDonald's grosses me out hardcore; I don't think I've even been inside one for years (even when I ate meat). This sandwich, however, looks so tasty. As does the corn!

I'd definitely take that over what McDonald's has to offer any day.

Sorry, but the apple pies are not vegan. They contain L-Cysteine, which is animal derived (duck feathers!).

Scroll down to "McDonald's Report" and look for "Desserts".

Looks good!

As for the vegan claim of McDonalds apple pie...

http://www.vrg.org/fastfoodinfo.htm

Why would you want to support a company that so flagrantly sells out the lives of millions of innocent animals and destroys rain forests at the same time?
Not to mention that it's brainwashing out children to become obese.

McDonald's puts "natural beef flavoring" which actually has no beef... Apparently it has whey or some sort of milk derivative, though. Weird.

My son has a dairy allergy, and when I contacted McDonald's regarding the apple pie I was told it contains whey powder. Perhaps their ingredients have changed since this thread first began in 2008. I was told by McDonald's that the apple pie is definitely not vegan.

I have a correction to my 7/23/13 post. The information I was given by phone about whey powder was incorrect. I wrote McDonald's asking for a current ingredient list (see below.) No egg or dairy, but still animal sourced dough conditioners.

Apple Pie: Apples, enriched flour (bleached wheat flour, malted barley flour, niacin, reduced iron, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), water, shortening [palm oil, soy lecithin, artificial flavor, beta carotene (color)], sugar, high fructose corn syrup, contains 2% or less of the following: food starch-modified, sorbitol, dextrose, brown sugar, sodium alginate, sodium citrate, sodium phosphate, dicalcium phosphate, yeast, salt, dehydrated apple powder, natural (plant source) and artificial flavors, nutmeg, preservatives (may contain one of more of the following: ascorbic acid, citric acid, erythorbic acid), enzymes, hydroxylated soy lecithin, L-cysteine (dough conditioner), annatto and turmeric (color), caramel color. Topping: [cinnamon sugar (sugar, cinnamon)].

CONTAINS: WHEAT AND SOY LECITHIN.

They did confirm that their fries contain milk. I never would have suspected.
