A Day In the Crunk Life

I always love reading what other people do and eat for a full day's time. Maybe that makes me creepy and stalker-ish (I also love to slyly check out what the folks in front of me at the grocery store have in their carts). But for the other weirdos like me, I thought it'd be fun to share a typical day in the life of Bianca (with food photos, of course!).

On work days, I wake up around 7 a.m., typically surrounded by six kitties who've likely been attempting to will me awake for hours. My 80-pound mutt Datsun, who gets the other half of the bed, sleeps way past the alarm though. I shower, wash my face, and settle into a tasty breakfast.

This morning, that brekkie was two slices of Whole Grain Toast with Marmite and Tofu "Cottage Cheeze":

I love this breakfast!!! I make my tofu cottage cheeze by mixing plain firm tofu with a few tablespoons of vegan mayo, a splash of soymilk, and a pinch of evap. cane juice. I washed this down with iced green tea. And I typically read magazines — Rolling Stone, VegNews, Vegetarian Times — while I eat breakfast.

After breakfast, I clean up the dishes, get dressed, put my face on, and straighten my hair. Then I head to the Memphis Flyer office, the alt-weekly newspaper I write for. This morning, I arrived around 9 a.m. and immediately made several phone calls to gather information for my stories that are due on Monday. Then I checked my e-mail, which always takes FOREVER. I typically get over 100 messages everyday, many of them are folks asking me to list their art show or gala in our paper's calendar of events, which I'm also responsible for.

At noon, I left the office to drive back home for lunch. I usually go home to eat lunch since I live about 10 minutes from work. And I typically eat leftovers from the previous night's dinner. Today that was a tasty Green Bean & Tofu Sesame Stir-fry:

I'd marinated some tofu in the basic Asian marinade from Veganomicon on Tuesday night. And for dinner on Wednesday, I tossed that tofu with some cornstarch, fried it in a little sesame oil, and added fresh, local green beans and bella mushrooms. I served it with some delicious smoked spelt that Mihl of Seitan Is My Motor sent me from Germany in a care package. The leftovers were just as tasty as the night before.

After lunch, I drove back to the office — worked on entering calendar listings, conducted several long phone interviews for stories, and blogged about this delicious vegan pizza I ate for the Flyer's Hungry Memphis food blog. I ate a piece of dark chocolate with almonds around 3:30 p.m.

Around 4:30 p.m., I snacked at my desk on some assorted veggies — cherry tomatoes, celery, radishes, and cucumbers — with black-eyed pea hummus. And then at 5 p.m., I left work for the gym. On Thursdays, I typically go to a Fight Club boxing class! It always kicks my ass. Tonight, we did over 100 lunges before hitting the boxing bags with gloves. I'm like Mike Tyson.

After boxing, I drove home, walked my doggy, and heated up this delicious Big Ass Veggie Burrito from Skinny Bitch In the Kitch:

This is obviously a pre-rolled picture. I made these for dinner on Sunday night, and I've been re-heating the fillings for fresh burritos all week. The fillings were made up of black beans, brown rice, nacho Teese sauce, and a veggie mix of squash, zucchini, tomatoes, bell peppers, and more. Tonight, I ate my burrito with a few Spicy Sweet Chili Doritos (a guilty vegan pleasure!). Oh, and I watched L.A. Ink on TLC while I ate my burrito.

After dinner, I always clean up and sweep my concrete floors. With seven fuzzy animals, daily sweeping is a must! When that was over, I whipped up this amazing Strawberry Watermelon Slushee from Vegan Soul Kitchen for dessert:

Wow, people! If you have VSK, please make this (if you don't, the recipe is here)! It's simply frozen watermelon juice ice cubes, frozen strawberries, agave, and lime. And it's so perfect! I've been having such a good time with Bryant Terry's watermelon chapter.

I enjoyed my slushee while driving to East Memphis to hit up Target and Whole Foods, about 20 minutes from my crib. I shopped around and headed back home. Here I am at 11:25 p.m. making this entry. Blogging is typically my last task of the night.

So there you have it....not all that exciting. And not really very crunk. But hey, it's a Thursday. I'm sure Saturday and Sunday will be way more exciting, but you'll have to wait 'til my next post on Sunday night to find out!

I'm just like you - I love to see a whole day in the life of a person's stomach! It is so interesting to me how we all have such different taste buds and preferences. That is why I started my Everyday Nums series, so I could show what I eat in an average day.

I love your day of food, from breakfast thru dinner everything looked really tasty, and like something I would make for myself. That burrito looked especially amazing. And that watermelon slushie! Is there anything more perfect for a summertime treat? I think not!

I like "day in the life" posts too, it's always fun to see what other people eat on a regular basis. Maybe someday I'll do a post like this too.
I also like to check out what other people have in their grocery carts too. So I guess you're not the only weirdo!

It's so cool that you take a boxing class. I always wanted to try something like that.

I too love checking out people's grocery carts. One time I saw a guy with a box of lobsters, a crate of oranges, and a bunch of vanilla pods... I was like, "wha?"

Anyways, sounds like a pretty awesome day! Can't believe you write for an alt-weekly, that is so rad! I used to love "Creative Loafing" when I lived in ATL.

And those burritos look amazing. Gonna have to get both of those cookbooks soon.

We made the same tofu and green bean stir-fry! Mine was without mushrooms, but other than that, the same meal. Tasty, wasn't it?

Sounds like you lead a fun, busy life!

Bianca,

As bloggers aren't we all creepsters, shady lurkers, and peeping toms. :) Haha. I am with you, I love to be nosy. But, it's so fun because I get so many great ideas! I just got Skinny Bitch in the Kitch and can't wait to make something. That burrito looked really tasty.

Your boxing class sounds intense. I wish I could take some sort of fitness class, but in my town of 2000 people there isn't anywhere to do that. But, I did buy the Skinny Bitch fitness series on DVD. All I have to say is those women are hilarious skinny bitches. Haha :)

What a fun post to read! I think your life sounds pretty nice :) You should post photos of your office and your house with concrete floors so we can all be super stalkerish next time! Haha, kinda kidding. I want a big ass veggie burrito now!

Mmm... I'd gladly eat a day in your life... or something that sounds less weird... Ha!

Hopefully you don't mind me asking a semi-unrelated question as I didn't see your e-mail anywhere... I noticed you commented on Vegan Homemade that you had looked into a vegan culinary school in oregon? I've been looking for one and have seen the "institute of culinary awakening" but seems like their website has been down forever... have you heard of another one? I'd be totally appreciative if you have a chance to answer... either here or you can email me (theloveofguava@gmail.com) my usually deft google skills have failed me in terms of vegan culinary school finding...

Thanks! Everything looks delish... as always!

Your post makes me realize that I need to snack more throughout the day! If I posted a day in the life of, it would be too boring. I'll have to work on changing that ;)

I have the Vegan Soul cookbook, but haven't tried anything out of it, yet. I'll have to try the watermelon slush recipe.

I heart your blog.

And I love food-stalking people, too...! I don't know if it's the foodie in me or the vegan looking for recipe ideas, but I did enjoy your post very much. VSK looks like it has tons of great recipes!

AND tomorrow, for my friend's b-day party, I will be making your deviled "egg-less" bites! I am so, SO very excited and will let you know how mine turn out! :D Oh, and I'll blog about them, too.

Great post - it is kind of fun to check in on other people's routines. I especially relate to life with large-ish animals who hog bed space and tend to shed everywhere. Very familiar :)

The food all looks awesome, especially that burrito (still haven't seen Teese around here), and the watermelon slushie is making me thirsty!

Hahaha, I love reading a day in the life post of bloggers too but I'm way too self-conscious to do it myself! And the shopping trolley thing? All the time!

Leftovers for lunch are my absolute favourite.

Day-in-the-life posts make my mini-voyeuristic side so happy! I just find people and their lives fascinating. Thank you for doing this, and especially for linking to the watermelon slushie recipe... it looks fantastic. :)

first off - 100 lunges and then boxing?!?! you're such a bad ass, Bianca! damn!

i love reading about what people do & eat all day. it totally facinates me - and thanks for sharing your routines, your day, and your yumminesses with us! (i too check out what other people have in their carts & baskets at the grocery store. tee hee!)

cottage cheeze sounds most delicious! we have some marmite here at the house, man - i love the stuff. which is funny because 12 years ago when i first tried vegemite in australia i hated it - now i love the stuff. mmmmmmm! almonds make for the best snack, and your leftovers rock so hard! the smoked spelt from Mihl sounds so delicious, and your burrito looks awesome & fantastical! that's nuts that you have so many messages, and very cool that you drive home for your lunch break. i live just a few minutes from work and do the same. i think julie loves her mid-day walk in the field behind our house - it's a nice break for her, and i get to play with our kitties, too. we also have quite the crew of fuzzy buddies here in our home - i vacuum every day. some day i hope to get hardwood floors - the carpet just traps all the fur. ick. i'm glad i bought a dyson - it rocks so hard! i still need to get the soul food cookbook, i also need to get that vegan table one as well. anywhoooooo - i think this is the longest comment - sorry! i hope you're having a super stellar weekend!

I agree, I get that feeling too, am I being a stalker? lol! Oh well, I think it's more about being connected to each other. Anyways, that burrito looks tasty. We have mexican food at least twice a week in our house. I think it's a California thing.

Hello - just found your blog - love it! I have never had marmite, though I am intrigued by it...and your watermelon smoothie looks SO GOOD and so refreshing. I wish I had one now.

I wondered how you stayed so skinny with all the food you make. Mystery solved!

I also like seeing a whole person in someone's food life (and looking at other people's grocery carts). Looks like a good day! I'm jealous that you get up at 7 though, I'm up at 6 every day and that extra hour would do wonders for me.

Meghan (Making Love In The Kitchen) said...

I have never understood the appeal of marmite. I tried it and still don't get it.

Sheridan said...

I check out other people's carts too and laughed out loud reading that you do that. This is why we are friends.
