Donuts That Are Just Okay?!

I never thought I'd say a donut was "just okay." But that's how I felt about these Cinnamon Donut Holes from Sarah Kramer's 2011 Go Vegan Wall Calendar:

I've LOVED every recipe I've ever made from Sarah, so I'm blaming my oven for this. My oven has failed me a few times before, and I didn't consult an oven thermometer first because I'm lazy like that.

But I had high hopes for these little cinnamon-coated boogers! They sound so yummy, and actually they taste yummy too. It's the texture that's just a little too dry for me. Fresh out of the oven last night, they were perfect. But as they cooled, the cakey donuts dried out on the insides. I intended to take these to work today, but since most of my co-workers are omnis, I only like to feed them recipes that turn out just right.

However, I didn't want to waste, so I dunked a few of these holes in a little soymilk to soften. And they were perfect. I've always had a thing for baked good dipped in liquid (true story: when I was in kindergarten, I liked to dip my Oreos in my cherry Kool-Aid during refreshment time at school).

Anyway, I'll probably eat all of these dipped in soymilk, and they're also better when heated in the microwave for a few seconds.

What do you do when baked goods don't come out as planned?

I've made these quite a few times and totally loved them. I've not had that problem. Tho one time I was too impatient for them to be done so they were a little on the underdone side. :)

I get annoyed but refuse to waste food so find a way to fix it or use it in another recipe. There's always something... google is your friend. Least they're not awful! :) Why not try a dipping sauce for them? or an icing/frosting? Hope the next batch is better! xxx

Whenever I make bread or muffins that don't turn out I make bread pudding out of it. You just leave sugar out of the recipe 'cause the bread is usually sweet enough.

alas! i do the same as you and avoid giving them to omnis b/c then you get those comments about how vegan food doesnt taste good.. maybe you coudl turn them into a funky donut bread pudding thing... glad they're good w/ soymilk! i love dipping pastries in coffee hah!

Ooh, I bet they'd be good w coffee! My oven sucks. It gets too hot so I always have to bake things either for a shorter time or on a lower temp. Its always an experiment- that I dont have time for! Lol ;)

I frequently have this problem with baked cake-style donuts... too dry! The only solution I've found so far is to use applesauce or pureed pumpkin in the batter... or make a liberal sauce to soak them in!

OMG...I'm a dunker too! That's too funny, because I used to do the same thing when I was a kid. Just last night I had some oreos and dunked them in my hot cocoa...lol Sometimes the kid in me just comes out.
Those little donuts sure look good. Too bad they turned out too dry. At least you found a way to salvage them. :o)

I generally improvise when things don't go well. I rinsed a curry off the other night because the sauce was bitter, then made a whole new dish with the cooked veggies! I'm thrifty and stubborn.
The donuts still look yummy to me....

I seem to have this curse that whenever I have this strong desire to bake for people and share yummy food, nothing turns out right. But if it's just Logan and I, it's perfection. At least I've learned to sample the goods before sharing, because like you said, you want to leave omnis with a great impression of veganism, not a "meh" one!

Usually my dog gets to eat them. Unless I can think of some way to repair it. Lilah

wait I thought all baked goods were like that? only good the day you make them? oh yeah because i'm gluten-free. ok there are some recipes that are Ok the next day but often this is the problem. heating up usually does the trick.
