I once read that miso soup and steamed rice are typical Japanese breakfast foods. I'm the kinda girl who can eat any food for breakfast (leftovers, pizza, cake, whatever), so while miso in the a.m. might sound strange for western tastes, I thought, "what the hell?" So I started occasionally making a steamy bowl for breakfast years ago.
Then I sort of forgot about the miso breakfast option. Until this week. This morning, I had a big ole bowl of Miso Soup made with Westbrae Yellow Miso paste, sauteed onions and carrots, plain tofu, and nori.
I try to avoid white rice unless I'm dining out or eating something fancy like jasmine rice or sushi rice. So I served my soup with a side of brown rice seasoned with soy sauce:
What weird foods do you eat for breakfast?
I took a three-cooking intensive with Christina in Pirello in June. I knew nothing about a macrobiotic diet when I walked in. I walked out with an intense love of eating grains and miso soup for breakfast! I have miso soup a couple of times a week for breakfast and love it. I toss in whatever veggies I have a around. So filling!
ReplyDeleteMiso is full of vitamins too! But I can't eat basically any food for breakfast :P In Brazil we usually have bread, cakes, juice and fruits or cereal, so this is usually my breakfast options even in Ireland!
ReplyDeletemiso is one of the world's best products, period. miso soup for the win, at any time of day. as for white rice, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE never eat the shit. I just finished another book ("Beating the Food Giants" by Paul Stitt) and the horrors of white bread, rice and sugar are just maddening.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I too can eat just about anything for breakfast. My favorite is pizza...
ReplyDeleteNormally I save Miso Soup for breakfast when I wake u with a tummyache. But its soooo yummy!
ReplyDeleteI'm the person whose been known to eat protein bars for breakfast, or french fries. xD
I would totally eat this for breakfast. I was in Thailand this year and the best breakfast option for me was a bowl of soup with rice, onions and tofu. It was typical there. Otherwise, all I could eat was white commercial bread with jam and sometimes sweetened peanut butter. I don't like that very much.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy pizza for breakfast too at times, but not cake... well, I tried cake for breakfast before, and I felt sick after... it was very sweet though, not like a coffee cake!
Tomato sandwiches are also great in the morning.
I often eat leftovers for breakfast. Savory or sweet, but usually savory. Today I had a haggis sandwich!
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna be Debbie Downer and say I'm not a fan of miso soup. I do like miso gravy and adding miso to enhance dressings or cheez sauces, but not soup. I will eat just about any sweet for breakfast. This morning I had brioche with chocolate frosting.
ReplyDelete9 DAYS!!!!
Not sure that I eat anything particularly weird for breakfast. Although I have no problems eating whatever was leftover from the previous night's dinner. Like the idea of miso for breakfast.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I'll eat a tofurkey, sauerkraut, and mustard sandwich with all the fixins for breakfast... but that's usually just in the summer, lol.
