I Got An iPhone!

My stupid old Razor phone was falling apart — the left side of the button pad didn't work and it died all the time — so my awesome dad offered to buy me an iPhone as an early birthday present. Thanks daddy!

I bought it Monday evening, and I've already become so obsessed with it! It's the perfect tool for an obsessive-compulsive, super-organized, crazy Type A person like me.

I immediately downloaded the Lose It app, a calorie-counter and fitness application that lets you know how many calories you should be consuming and what you're actually eating. You simply enter the foods you eat for each meal, plus any exercise. Then at the end of the day, you get a pretty good picture of your overall calorie consumption/calorie burning.

For example, today I was allotted for 1,697 calories for my height and weight (I don't want to lose, just maintain). After breakfast (baked beans on toast), lunch (whole wheat spaghetti with marinara), snacks (Clif Mojo bar, cantaloupe, trail mix), and dinner (leftover BBQ ribs, mac & cashew cheeze, and collard greens), plus a 45-minute treadmill workout and walking the dog, I wound up with 1,691 calories! Pretty darn close!

Other apps I've downloaded include Eight Glasses a Day (keeps track of how much water you consume), Vegan Xpress (a full list of vegan foods at popular chain and fast food joints, as well as a vegan wine and beer guide), the Leaping Bunny Shopping Guide (list of cruelty-free products), the New York Times, Vegan YumYum's cookbook app, the Whole Foods recipe guide and store locator app, and of course Facebook!

But I'd like some input from other iPhone users on their favorite apps. There's so many to choose from that I know I'm missing out on some good ones. Do you have an iPhone? If so, what are your can't-live-without apps?

  1. WOW! As soon as I get back to the states I'm going to buy an i-phone, I had no idea that it had all of those cool applications! Seriously cool!

I-phones don't work here in Saudi/Bahrain so I have an i-touch, which is just the ipod part of the iphone. I like the touch screen technology and how much fun it is to play with, so I'm sure I'll love an i-phone.

So happy for you and your new gadget!

  2. Man, I'm jealous. My bro has an iPhone and it's awesome.

I like the bubble wrap game, it's addictive.

There's also a programme, which might already be on there, where you can hold it up to a speaker or when there's music playing, if you want to know what a song is and it'll search and find it for you. Pretty damn cool!

  3. I'm tempted by an I Phone just for the vegan friendly apps! My boy has one though so I can just make him download most of them.

I think there's one that works out where you are and then shows you how to get to the nearest tube / bus / train station by giving you a map of where you are with arrows to show you where to walk. That'd be pretty useful when traveling.

  5. I love the epicurious app- you can put vegan parameters on your search for recipes.

Also, Shazam lets you find a song you're listening to (at a store, on the radio, etc) and tells you the name of the song, who sings it, and where to buy it.

    Have fun!

  6. I think an iPhone would be too overwhelming for me. Plus, I hate touch screens, they never work for me!

  7. I'm not going to comment because I am jealous.

OK, I am going to comment, but only to say that I am jealous.

    :) Have fun!

  11. I got an itouch recently and haven't quite gotten the hang of it yet. (But I did download Skype for talking to my long-distance boyfriend.)

I love all these app ideas, I'm going to try them out asap!

  12. I truly don't think I could live without my iPhone. I use it ALL THE TIME! Three of my favorite food-centric apps:

VegOut: It locates you on GPS and tells you what veggie/vegan friendly restaurants are on the road. It's great for road trips and I've found awesome restaurants!

Urbanspoon: Great to look at restaurant reviews, etc

    Yelp: Similar to Urbanspoon

    Happy iPhone-ing!

  14. I'm in love wiht mine too. Got it less than a month ago. I like the app "Vegan Steven" that helps you find vegan restaurants and stores around you. And the "Tattoo of the Day" from NY Adorned where you see a random tattoo design every day. (I love tattoos). "Natural Cures" is another great one with natural and homemade medicine for a ton of different diseases.

    Have fun with you phone!

  15. Now I kind of want one too! My boyfriend has one and doesn't nearly use it to its potential. Every time were disagreeing on something the internet could easily solve, he refuses to use his phone internet!
