Chocolate for Breakfast!

Who says you can't have dessert first thing in the morning? I'm kind of a rebel, so that's how I roll sometimes. Like this morning when I dined on creamy Chocolate Gravy and Whole Wheat Buttermilk Biscuits:

This is actually an old picture that I posted last year, but I really did have the same dish again this morning. I was just too lazy to take another picture when I knew there was one in the archives.

I first tried chocolate gravy on a family trip to Michigan City, Indiana (visiting the same relatives I mentioned in the dumplins post). But it's a Southern food tradition, so this recipe (as well as the biscuit one) is going in my cookbook.

Lucky for ya'll, I spilled the recipe for this in my old post, and you can find that here. The only difference in the updated recipe I used for the most recent batch is subbing whole wheat pastry flour for all-purpose (since I don't use that anymore).

Testers, I've finally posted this week's recipes on my tester site...though I'm a few days late. Sorry!

  1. Good for you. I've never seen a recipe for it with healthy items in it. That's awesome.

Chocolate gravy is a very underground southern thing. A lot of southerner's to my amazement have never heard of it. My parents were from the Ozarks so it was a regular item on our breakfast table.

A restaurant in Decatur, AL, (The Green Tomato or something along those lines) actually had it on their menu which I found shocking.

  2. I didn't know chocolate gravy was a southern thing! My very non-southern friends used to make it, but only for special occasions...there's got to be a special occasion coming up soon , right? Either way - love it!

  9. my foster dad (who is a retired presby minister) told me stories about how his momma would make biscuits n' chocolate gravy because it was cheap and they often didn't have enough money to buy groceries. "she'd get what she could get, but she'd always get a bag of flour, a bag of sugar, and some cocoa powder to make chocolate gravy and biscuits." he grew up as a sharecropper in pine bluff, AR.

  11. my man makes me chocolate gravy for breakfast a few times a year-- just one of the many reasons i love him.

he is so entirely southern that he actually usually drinks sweet tea while we eat it. no joke.

  14. dayummmm, i want me summa that gravy! :)

and yeah, i agree about enjoying the food more when your by yourself sometimes...i just kinda took my time and savored every bite! and with the dessert especially..i didn't feel the need to eat it as fast as i could bc of all the competing forks haha (idk if that ever happens to you when you share desserts, but i don't like it! lol)

finally, how do you get your blogroll thing to update with whoever has posted most recently, with the listing of how much time ago they posted?
