I Love Miso Mayo!

Don't get me wrong. I heart Vegenaise. But I've just discovered a new love, and his name is Miso Mayo. I'd seen him in Whole Foods a time or two, and though I was attracted to his colorful packaging, I didn't think he shared my vegan beliefs. Luckily, Miss V of Miss V's Vegan Cookbook is really into him too. She wrote about Miso Mayo in a blog post a few weeks ago. Intrigued, I picked up a bottle at Whole Foods.

Miso Mayo is made from expeller-pressed canola oil, miso, cider vinegar, organic gluten-free tamari, and onion. It tastes very different from Vegenaise, which is more reminescent of omni mayo. Miso Mayo actually reminds me of the cheap tubs of French onion dip that I used to devour as a kid. I LOVED that stuff with chips. And though it's not exactly the same, the onion in the mayo lends it a similar flavor.

For lunch today, I used some of the alternative mayo to make this Miso Mayo Tofu Eggless Salad:

Served on sprouted grain pita bread with sunflower blue corn chips, the stuff made a filling and quick lunch. Here's the recipe.

Miso Mayo Tofu Eggless Salad
--------------------------------------------
1 lb. firm tofu
1/4 cup Miso Mayo
2 Tbsp. dill pickle relish (I used my Granny's homemade stuff, but storebought it fine!)
1/2 tsp. turmeric
2 Tbsp. diced red onion
salt and pepper to taste

Crumble tofu and stir in miso mayo, relish, onion, and spices. Eat and enjoy!

And in case ya'll were wondering, Datsun's surgery went fine. I won't know anything about the tumor until biopsy results come back, but the vet thinks the lump looked more like a cyst. Datsun's kinda drugged up right now and he keeps stumbling around the house. But, as you can see here, he still wants to play with his dirty old ball:

I've been telling him "no ball" all night because the vet advised against activity. But it's so hard to resist that cute puppy face!

Hope Datsun is getting lots of needed rest and feels like himself again.

Oh, and I'm so sorry I didn't remember you were writing a cookbook too (well, I new you were but I had a senior moment, yikes, it's early for that). Anyways, I added your name to the list!

  12. Miso mayo eh? We don't have a Whole Foods in my town, and in fact, I've never been able to find anything miso beyond soup packets! I see veg*ns using it all the time, I wonder if I shouldn't scope out the Asian market here in town for it.

I'm so happy to hear that Datsun's surgery went alright! I don't think I could resist that face either, what a cutie!

  20. Miso Mayo is available in the refrigerated section for those looking...

I love to use it for quick reubens with thick slices of seitan roast (wrapped in horribly un-eco plastic) and live/raw sauerkraut (Cultured brand is my fave - mmm - dill & garlic) - all in the same section at Rainbow, WF and Berkeley Bowl!

  21. I was addicted to that French onion dip as a child. Give me a bag of Ruffles and I was good to go. I haven't seen this product but I'm going to keep my eyes open for it now. I wonder how hard it would be to replicate.

It's so funny you commented on my blog yesterday. I've had yours up in Bloglines (my feed reader) for the past few days and am slowly but surely getting through the last 58 posts I missed while I took my little hiatus.

YES YES AND DEFINITELY YES!!! I would love to see you the next time you come to Nashville. Maybe we can meet up for a meal. Send me an email at vivaciousvegan at gmail dot com.

  22. I did it! I finally caught up.

Your dad is awesome. He totally rocks for sending you vegan grub. Especially the Teese. And your mom and granny - too sweet for veganizing all of your family's favorites for you.

Sucks about the move but now you have a bigger kitchen so yay!

Un-f'ing-believable. I can't get over people breaking into your house. That has to feel like such a huge violation. Hugs to you!

Oh, and your boyfriend's picture with that little kitten is so adorable. I just want to smoosh them both in one massive bear hug.

  23. Aww, he looks so sad... but sooooo cute! Feel better, dear guy!

And haha Bianca I definitely don't eat soup with chopsticks... they were there for the zucchini ;o)

(Although my uncle eats lasagna with chopsticks. Weird, huh?)

  24. Datsun and his old ball remind me of the things my dogs develop attachment to. Puppy Maya's favorite is a beat up toy plastic car she found on a walk over a year ago. She carried it home, and it's still her preferred item to throw around the apartment and bark at. We send our best to Datsun!
