I'm the Last Vegan In the World...

... to make Snobby Joes from the Veganomicon:

Well, maybe not the very last ... but definitely toward the bottom of the list. For those who don't know, the Snobby Joe is the Isa and Terry version of a sloppy joe. Instead of using tofu or TVP (like many vegan sloppy joe recipes), these call for lentils seasoned with chili powder, diced green pepper, onion, garlic, and a bit of maple syrup.

It's the maple that really sets the taste apart. They're not at all sweet, as you might expect using maple syrup. Instead, the maple brings out the hearty chili flavor.

I served the sandwich open-faced on two halves of a sprouted grain bun, alongside these Roasted Garlic Potatoes:

I actually bought these new potatoes at the farmer's market about two months ago. But they stayed fresh in my Debbie Meyer Green Bags, which purport to keep produce crisp far past the date.

I quartered the potatoes, tossed with a bit of olive oil, chopped garlic, and Sonny Salt (a locally-produced seasoning blend) and roasted them on 500 degrees for about 15 to 20 minutes.

HELL YES FOR MAKING THE SNOBBY JOES!!! I make a double-batch of the recipe and keep portions of it in the freezer, to have on-hand :0)

Those roasted-garlic potatoes also look/sound enticing - yum!!

Uhh, now your reminding me how much I love that recipe! If it wasn't so messy I would make it for my road trip, heck its so good I should just make it anyways!

those snobby joes look awesome, too. i make my sloppy joes with tempeh, but i'm totally gonna have to pull out my copy of vcon and give these ones a shot. mmmmmmmmmmmmm! i love the idea of using maple syrup in them, too - good to know they're not sweet. yay!

those look great, especially with the potatoes! what a perfect food! don't worry, i bought 'nomicon the day it came out and still haven't made these yet! i think it's because i have my own sloppy josie recipe i make, which uses tempeh as the "ground beef." you crazy vegans...

happy birthday bianca! i haven't made snobby joes yet, but that sounds really good, esp since fall is in full swing paired with some sweet potato fries, i think that would make an awesome meal.

Since half of my heart is from Louisiana (and still lives there), I used Steen's Cane Syrup in place of maple syrup. yum!
